WE9: Riding a Bicycle

“That looks very fun! I would like to learn how to ride a bicycle too!” thought John to himself as he saw his neighbour, Walter, cycling a brand new bicycle past him in the park one Sunday morning. John quickly called out to Walter and politely asked him to stop and teach him how to ride a bicycle. Walter was very kind and agreed to teach him.

John shared with Walter that he only knew how to ride a bicycle with training wheels. He wanted to learn how to ride a two-wheeled bicycle like Walter. Walter said he would be happy to teach him. Instantly, a wide smile spread across John’s face. Walter helped John get on the bicycle and supported him as he started cycling. John felt a litte nervous and could hardly contain his excitement.

After a few minutes, John was able to pedal slowly and cycle shakily on his own. After a bit of  practice, he became more confident and started cycling faster and faster. He was enjoying himself so much that he became overconfident and careless. Walter had to remind him to be careful and slow down.

John ignored Walter’s warningThe sun shone in the cerulean blue sky as a gentle breeze swept across my cheeks. It is the weekends! I decided to go for a walk at the nearby park. Strolling, I saw my neighbour, Ben, cycling on his brand-new bicycle. I asked politely if he could teach me how to ride the two-wheeled bicycle. Ben agreed as he alighted from his bicycle. I was as happy as a lark.

as he was having a whale of a time. Unfortunately, he did not notice a small rock in front of him. In a blink of an eye, he hit the rock and lost his balance and fell off his bicycle. Fortunately, he fell on soft ground and was not badly injured. Walter scolded him for not listening to his advice. He said that they had to go home to treat John’s minor cuts and bruises. John realised his carelessness and apologised for not taking heed to Walter’s advice. He felt foolish and embarrassed for getting hurt while cycling.

The sun shone in the cerulean blue sky as a gentle breeze swept across my cheeks.

Excitedly, I thought it would be easy to ride, just like a four- wheeled bicycle. As I got on the bicycle, I started wobbling left and right. My heart was pounding fast and cold sweat started to trickle down my forehead. I was nervous. This was my first time riding on a two-wheeled bicycle. Ben held onto the handle bars of his bicycle and helped me keep my balance.

“Keep pedalling and look forward!” he yelled as I gained confidence and rode forward. “You got it! You got it!” he cheered excitedly. As I gained more confidence, I started to ride faster and faster. Suddenly, I started to lose control of the bicycle. “Wham!!!” I fell and landed on the ground with a loud thud.

Ben quickly sprinted towards me screaming for help at the same time. Pain, raw and intense, pulsated through my body. A bolt of excruciating pain shot through my ankle. I felt foolish and embarrassed as I should have pedalled slower and not let my pride take over me. Afterall, this was my first attempt at learning to cycle. I should not be over-confident.

Learning To Cycle

One glorious day, Jim was strolling at a park near his house. "Ring! Ring!" He saw his neighbor, Jonathan, riding his brand new bicycle. “Jonathan, Jonathan! Could you teach me how to ride a bicycle?" Jim asked politely. Jonathan nodded his head immediately.

Jonathan held the handlebars of the bicycle firmly so that Jim would not lose his balance. After a while, Jim told Jonathan he could cycle on his own. Jonathan smiled at Jim for learning how to cycle so fast.

Jim was on cloud nine. He asked Jonathan to let go of his hands so that he could learn how to balance the bicycle. Jonathan listened to him and reminded him not to cycle too fast. But Jim did not listen and pedalled furiously.

Suddenly, Jim lost his balance and fell off the bicycle. Jim was injured. He suffered cuts and bruises on his hands and legs. Jonathan chided Jim for not taking heed to his advice. Then Jonathan helped Jim home to get treatment for his injury. Jim was very thankful for Jonathan's assistance. He learns to be more careful in cycling and not to be over-confident in future.

A Bicycle Accident

It was a sunny and windy Saturday morning. Jerry and his parents went jogging at the nearby park. Jerry was enjoying a stroll when his parents were  exercising with their friends. "Ring! Ring!" He heard the bicycle bell ringing and  turned his head around to check where the sound came from. He saw his neighbor, Timmy, riding his brand new bicycle.

"Hi Timmy, could you teach me how to ride a bicycle?" Jerry had wanted to learn cycling a long time ago. He asked Timmy politely to teach him. “Sure! I can teach you. Come here!" replied Timmy. Jerry was as happy as a lark. Timmy taught Jerry to hold the handle bars to balance the bicycle. Jerry could hardly contain his excitement to learn cycling. He flashed a wide smile and his face shone with happiness.

"Timmy, I think I can balance on my own now. You can let go of your hands!" uttered Jerry. "Are you sure you can balance?" asked Timmy. "Yes, I can! Please let go of your hands now," Jerry said confidently. Timmy agreed and let go of his hands.

After a short while, Jerry could not balance by himself and he tried to stop the bicycle, but it was too big and his foot could not touch the ground. He lost his balance and fell off his bicycle in a blink of an eye. “My knees are so painful!” moaned Jerry. His ankles and knees suffered minor cuts and bruises. “Are you OK?” Timmy rushed forward to check on his injuries. Fortunately, Jerry did not knock his head on the hard ground. His parents saw Jerry falling down and quickly fetched him to a nearby clinic immediately for treatment. Jerry had to rest and could not walk for a week. He had learnt to wear protection pads when cycling to protect himself.

A Bicycle Ride

One sunny afternoon, Jake was taking a stroll at a nearby park . While he was strolling, he saw his neighbor, John, riding a brand new bicycle towards him.

He had always wanted to learn how to ride a bicycle, so he approached John to ask him politely if he could teach him how to ride a bicycle. John nodded his head instantly and Jake could hardly contain his excitement. He was jumping up and down with joy.

Jake sat on the bicycle, holding tight to the handlebars. Then he began to pedal slowly with John holding the back of the bicycle. After a while, John let go of his hands and told Jake to continue cycling. Jake became over-confident and pedaled too fast. In a blink of an eye, he lost his balance and fell down.

Jake suffered minor cuts and bruises on his legs. John told Jake that it was important to ride slowly and carefully while still learning to cycle. Jake nodded and instantly felt foolish and embarrassed of his action of riding too fast because he became over-confident.

Littering with a banana peel

The cool wind caressed Tom’s cheeks as he decided to go for a walk. Before going out, he felt hungry so he brought a banana with him. While strolling, he ate the banana. He then threw the peel on the ground even though there was a litter bin beside him.

A while later, an old man passed by the place where Tom threw the banana peel. The old man did not see the banana peel on the ground, stepped on it and slipped down with a loud thud. He groaned in pain and could not stand up.by himself. Tom was sitting on a nearby bench so he knew what had happened.

Dan, a young man, saw the old man groaning in pain. He came to help him up. Dan then asked Tom what had happened. Tom explained to him all that happened.  Then Dan chided Tom and told him to apologise to the old man.

Fortunately, the old man forgave Tom. He felt ashamed of what he had done. He promised not to throw any banana peel on the ground again.

Kite Trouble

One sunny morning, Chase was bored at home so he decided to go out to go to an open field near his house to fly his kite. When he reached there, he immediately flew his kite.

All of a sudden, his hand slipped and his kite flew into a nearby tree.  When he was wondering how to get his kite down, he found a long pole on the ground. He tried to use it to get his kite out of the tree.  While he was doing so, the pole accidentally poked a beehive and a swarm of bees came rushing out.

Chase screamed incessantly in terror and ran into a nearby pond.  He took a deep breath and dived into it as he had to hold his breath under water for some time. The bees hovered above the pond and when they could not find Chase, they flew away, disappointedly.

From that experience, Chase has learnt that he has to be more careful in the future not to fly his kite near a tree.

One windy Wednesday, Xavier was sitting by the window, feeling bored. School was closed for PSLE Oral Exam, so he had plenty of time to laze around at home. He decided to go to the nearby park to fly a kite. He had a whale of a time flying his kite.

Suddenly, a strong gust of wind blew his kite into a big tree. Xavier tried pulling his kite off from the tree but it did not move an inch! Just at that moment, he found a long pole on the ground. He picked it up and tried hitting the kite down. Unfortunately, instead of hitting the kite down, he accidentally hit a bee hive!

Without warning, a swarm of bees flew out of the bee hive, getting ready to sting him. He ran as fast as his legs could carry him. Suddenly, he thought that bees hate water as they will drown in the water.

Just at that moment, he saw a pond in front of him. He took a deep breath before he dived into the pond. He knew the bees would not sting him. The bees waited for a long time for him to appear from the pond. Halfway through the waiting, they became tired of waiting, so they flew away.

Xavier has learnt to look more carefully before acting and not to fly kites near trees again.

What is takes to be an IJ girl

I started my primary school in 2020 as I enrolled in Primary 1 at CHIJ (Katong) Primary. In these last two years, I was exposed to CHIJ values and visions.

I experience and learn as I observe my school teachers and my school seniors living by the values and virtues of the school. I align myself to the school mission and vision so that I can be an accomplished IJ girl.

We have been inspired and motivated to inculcate the values below:

To be simple in virtue and steadfast in duty:

Our school encourages us to live simply and to value high morals in character building. Our teachers guide and encourage us to show responsibility as students. We are to pay attention in class and complete our work to hand in punctually.

Teamwork

When working in groups, we are taught to bond with our classmates and learn from one another. Unity is strength. If there is good teamwork, we can then produce better work. Different school activities are encouraged to be done in teams, so this helps us to connect and grow together.

Honesty and Truthfulness

Our ethics class helps us to see the value of living honestly and standing by the truth. We are encouraged to fight our fear and to acknowledge our mistakes. We learn to appreciate the value of honesty and truthfulness.

Equality and Just fulness

Our school has students coming from different quarters of life with different strengths and weaknesses. My classmates all have different backgrounds. We value each and everyone and opportunities are provided equally to all. We are taught to overcome any kind of biasedness.

Freedom from self-interest

Our teachers remind us and guide us to break free from self-indulging action and thoughts. We are taught to empathise with our fellow classmates. Working together and sharing work with each other make us more caring and accepting towards all.

Loving and Caring

As an IJ girl, we grow to become responsible adults. We are reminded to be kind and loving. At school in our class, our teachers encourage us to take part in different activities which make us understand the value of being loving and caring towards one another.

These values are the basis of our learning at CHIJ. As we grow up appreciating these values, we imbibe them slowly and transform into a complete IJ girl.

Title: What it means to be an IJ girl?

I feel happy and proud to be an IJ girl. I am taught to be hardworking and do my best in class and at home. I will treat my friends with honesty and sincerity. I always try to understand how others feel and respect them for who they are. I wish that we, IJ  girls, could make the world a better place to live in. Besides that, we should live up to our school virtues of self-discipline, integrity, compassion and respect, wherever we are.

The Bee Attack

The Bee Attack

One breezy morning, Bruce was flying his kite in a park near his house. He enjoyed flying his kite on such a windy morning. Bruce was jumping up and down when a strong gust of wind tossed his kite into a tall tree nearby.

“Oh no!” exclaimed Bruce as he wondered what to do next. Suddenly, an idea struck his mind. Bruce plucked up his legs and ran to find a long stick. He spotted a long pole on the ground and picked it up. “Maybe I could use this to get my kite out of the tree,” thought Bruce as he ran back to the tall tree where his kite was stuck in. He started to poke at his kite, but little did he know that he was poking a beehive, instead of the kite. Immediately, a swarm of buzzing bees came rushing out of the beehive and were ready to sting Bruce!

Terrified, Bruce quickly turned around and spotted a pond. He sprinted across the grass and the flowers and took a deep breath. Feeling worried, Bruce dived into the pond and held his breath. The swarm of buzzing bees buzzed above Bruce’s head and were deciding if they should go back to their beehive.

Bruce’s lungs burned in need of air and so, Bruce burst to the surface of the pond. He gasped and gasped for air. Sadly, he climbed out of the pond and walked home. Bruce had learnt his lesson that day. Always be careful of your surroundings and always be careful of what you are poking at.
